Living in Manilva year-round: services, schools, healthcare and getting around
There is a significant difference between choosing somewhere to own a holiday home and choosing somewhere to live. Once you are staying for more than a few weeks, practical questions start to matter. Where is the nearest health centre? What are the local schools like? Can you shop locally? How easy is it to get around?
This is where Manilva has an advantage. It may occupy one of the quieter stretches of the western Costa del Sol, but this is not simply a holiday destination. Manilva is a working municipality with schools, healthcare, shops, sports facilities, public transport and local services supporting a permanent community throughout the year.
For owners at NUBAY, it means combining a beachfront home with the infrastructure needed for everyday life.
Three centres, one community
Understanding Manilva means understanding its geography. Manilva pueblo is the traditional village slightly inland, where you will find the Town Hall and many municipal services. San Luis de Sabinillas is the main coastal town, with supermarkets, shops, banks, pharmacies, schools, cafés and restaurants. Between and around them are established residential areas and the bustling Puerto de la Duquesa, the municipality’s marina and another important focus for restaurants and leisure.
Rather than relying on a single resort centre, residents have several distinct areas to draw on, each with its own role in daily life.
Schools and family life
Families living in Manilva have access to local state education from the early years through secondary school, but the wider area also offers some excellent private and international options.
The prestigious day and boarding Sotogrande International School is around 20 minutes away and offers the International Baccalaureate from the early years through to the Diploma Programme. Further east along the coast, Atalaya International School, Laude San Pedro International College and Aloha College add to the choice of private and international education available.
For younger children, there are nurseries and early-years facilities locally, while the concentration of schools around Sotogrande makes Manilva a practical base for international families who want to live by the sea without compromising on education.
Outside the school day, beaches, playgrounds and municipal sports facilities provide plenty of options locally, with sailing, golf, tennis and other activities available across Manilva and nearby Sotogrande.
Family life extends well beyond school. Municipal sports facilities and activities, beaches and playgrounds provide plenty to do locally, while the shops and services of Sabinillas make the everyday school-week routine considerably easier.
Healthcare close to home
Healthcare is another important consideration when moving permanently to the coast.
Manilva has public health centres in both Manilva and Sabinillas, alongside local pharmacies. The Sabinillas centre has recently expanded its medical team, including additional doctors, a family and community nurse and a new midwife.
For hospital and specialist care, residents can access facilities further along the Costa del Sol, including hospitals in Estepona and Marbella.
That combination of local primary care and larger medical facilities within driving distance is particularly valuable for families, retirees and anyone planning to make Manilva their principal home.
Shopping and everyday essentials
One of the benefits of living near an established town such as Sabinillas is that ordinary life does not disappear at the end of summer.
Essential everyday businesses serve the resident population, while cafés, tapas bars and restaurants provide a social life that extends beyond the traditional holiday season.
Manilva also has the practical infrastructure of a permanent municipality, from local police and municipal offices to utilities and community services.
And when you want more choice, Estepona is the natural next stop along the coast, with a wider range of shopping, restaurants and professional services.
Getting around
A car remains useful for living in this area of the Costa del Sol, particularly if you commute or regularly travel between towns, but Manilva is not dependent on one form of transport.
The A-7 provides the main coastal connection towards Estepona and Marbella in one direction and Sotogrande, La Línea and Gibraltar in the other. Manilva sits around 35 kilometres from Gibraltar, making the territory and its airport particularly useful for residents travelling to and from the UK.
Bus services also link La Duquesa and Sabinillas with Estepona, La Línea and Algeciras, alongside municipal transport. In 2026, Manilva introduced reduced local bus fares, including free travel for residents aged 65 and over.
For wider international connections, Málaga Airport is the principal hub, while Gibraltar Airport provides a useful alternative.
The benefit of a town that works all year
Perhaps the biggest advantage is not any single school, shop or service. It is having them all within the same municipality.
Living permanently on the coast feels very different when the surrounding area has been built around residents as well as visitors. Children go to school, people commute to work, appointments need to be kept, local shops are used and community services operate regardless of the season.
Manilva still offers the beaches, marina, golf and outdoor lifestyle associated with summer on the Costa del Sol. But behind that is something equally important: the infrastructure of a place people call home.
